Preparing for Procedure
There are things that will need to be considered if surgery or procedure has been arranged for you. We understand it can be stressful time.
Some of things to consider prior to surgery are listed below:
- Fill in your hospital registration form. Some hospitals allow on-line registration (your doctor will mention this to you during the consultation). Please return the form to the hospital at least 1 week before surgery.
- Some medications may need to be ceased temporarily. Examples are blood thinning medications (Clopidogrel, Warfarin etc), diabetic medications or some herbal supplements. You doctor will explain this to you during the consultation.
- Some major surgery (eg liver or pancreatic surgery) will require you to have Iron and Nutritional supplements. You may be advised to start iron tablets and Impact nutritional drinks at least 1 week before surgery.
- If you are a smoker, try to stop smoking. If it is not possible, please try to reduce the amount that you smoke.
- Report any infection eg cold or flu prior to surgery as it may impact on your recovery.
- Please consider if you might need a period of rehabiliation after major surgery. If you think you might need to have further recuperation, the hospital can assist you in that matter.
- Try to organise some support for when you leave hospital to help you with home tasks eg cooking, cleaning, laundry etc.
